Deuel County, South Dakota was named after Jacob S. Deuel a member of the Dakota Territorial
Council of 1862 & 1863.

Jacob S. Deuel & a friend Hugh Compton came to the Dakota territory together in 1860.  They
built a saw mill to get a financial start.

The two partners then purchased land which they thought would be the railroad right of way.
Deuel went broke and left the area.  Compton remained and later named the county after his best
friend.

Jacob S. Deuel was the son of Joseph Deuel.  Since Jonathan retained the name of Devol whose
present bloodline is continued today in Ohio and New England and Jeremiah Deuel is our
ancestor..  These were the three sons of Jonathan Davol of Dartmouth, Mass 1737.

The information on Deuel of South Dakota was obtained from Mrs. E. Cochrane of Gary S.D.
who did considerable research while writing & organizing the Deuel Co. Bicentennial Pageant
1976.  Most of Mrs. Cochrane's information was obtained from Dr. Donald D. Parker, History
Dept., S.D. State College & his book "History Of Our Country and State."
