| "CINDY DID SOLVE THIS PUZZLE" - David Leung On this third September 11th remembrance, I wanted to include something positive and upbeat to remember Cindy. I'd like to thank Cindy's Columbia University friends David Leung and Kevin for providing the puzzle solution. I included some old email excerpts from David so you could see how he knew Cindy. Thanks David! I got to know Cindy when she was working as the chemistry graduate student coordinator at Columbia. I should mention that she had been so helpful and that I would not have been able to graduate without her, but I guess that is perhaps a bit too obvious knowing Cindy. Frankly, she was more like a friendly enemy to me. We used to give each other brainteasers and geometry problems; we had a lot of fun trying to drive each other nuts--in a good way. And as much as I want to deny, Cindy always finished the New York Times crossword puzzles before I did. I shall forever treasure the time and brain damage we caused each other. The brainteasers that Cindy and I gave each other were all oral, face-to-face kind of challenges. We enjoyed making fun of how long the other person takes to solve a "trivial" question. "Oh, come on, that's SO obvious!" "Oops, time's up, where is your solution??" My guess is that you have experienced yourself and have heard from others Cindy's magnetic personality, wonderful sense of humor, and tremendous brain power. Perhaps, and I am saying this only as a naive "outsider," we should all remember her lovely smile, and above all, we should congratulate each other that we have the fortune to have Cindy in our lives. Would you rather not have known Cindy at all and therefore never lost her? Would I? Honestly, I am glad that I know Cindy. Having known her for only a VERY brief part of my life, Cindy had made a permanent mark in my memory. So we had little chats in many mornings over coffee, and we talked after work about life, art, and what have you. Little things. Little things here and there but wonderful time. David Leung October 2001 My friend Kevin and I had a discussion with Cindy and concluded that it is impossible to draw such a line and mathematically proved it. So Cindy DID SOLVE this puzzle. Attached please find a brief version of the PROOF. David Leung July 18, 2004 |
