Captain Ephraim Deuel
There's nothing more about Ephraim's marriage, background, lineage or children, but I
checked into Seth Griffith. His father Jonathan3 (Aaron2, Jeremiah1) Griffith was a Quaker
from Dutchess, and Aaron2 was from Rochester MA (like Abraham4 Deuel). Jonathan3
Griffith owned a farm that in modern times is known as "Lakeside Forest Camp," owned in
1980 by a Mr. & Mrs. Rolland W. Gifford. So something told me I was on to something.
Seth Griffith's mother was Hannah5(Timothy4, Jeremiah3, etc.) Deuel. She married Jonathan
Griffith in Nine Partners in 1771. Seth and his wife, who was a Hoag, had a daughter who
married a John White in Grand Isle --- John White's mother was Zilpha/Zelpha5 (Timothy4,
Jeremiah3) Deuel. Seth's wife's mother was Phebe5 (Ephraim4, Hugh3, Nicholas2, Hugh1)
Mosher (Nicholas2 Mosher married an Audley sister of the wife of Jonathan2 Davol). And
Ephraim4 Mosher's mother was Mary3(Jonathan2) Davol.
Phebe Hoag's sister Mary was also in South Hero, married to Wesson(John5, William4-1)
Macomber, another old Dartmouth distant cousin of mine. And who was Wesson Macomber's
mother? Another Deuel, of course, this time a daughter of our old friend Silas4(Jeremiah3),
Mary5 Deuel of Dutchess.
So a couple of things become clear:
1. The Ephraim Deuel who was buried in Philipsburg in 1846, and I think I saw him referred
to somewhere as Ephraim, Jr., is very likely the son of Capt. Ephraim Deuel of VT and
Philipsburg. (And possibly of RI --- Timothy4 Deuel is the only one I know of in RI (Bristol)
in the 1740s --- maybe his brother Ephraim4, who is alive in 1753 because he is mentioned in
Jeremiah3's will --- went with him, perhaps accompanied by Tristam4, as none of them show
up in Dartmouth VRs after their births. Perhaps they went to Dutchess for a time as well).
2. The Captain Ephraim Duel in VT with the powder horn ca. 1760 would have to be born ca.
1740 or before. That there is a British coat of arms on it would indicate that it dates from the
time of the French wars. And all of these connections of the administrator of his estate in VT
to the family of Timothy4 would indicate that this indeed could be Ephraim4. (His estate in
Canada may have been adminstered by his son or someone else --- presumably he died with
either realty or personalty still owned in South Hero).
I'll play with the dates and see how the later known Philipsburg Deuels would seem to fit in.
I'll also do some more hunting around to see what birth records might exist in Missisquoi, or
through the Anglican church there.
