I was thinking that if the chauffeur Charles Deuel who was in your grandfather's household in 1927 could be
found that would be a great lead. We already know someone in Passaic who had a brother named Charles
Deuel, namely Jay Clarence. I found Charles E[phraim] Deuel in 1930, age 65, an Episcopal minister,
WI/NY/NY. He was born in 1864 in Chilton, WI, so he seems to fit. I was hoping he would have a son
Charles, but there's none in this census. He has a daughter Eleanor, 22, IL/WI/NY and a son John B. Deuel,
19. There is also a servant, Jenny Lind, 22, CA/Sweden/Sweden. Gee, a house in Santa Barbara, a young
Swedish maid, those Episcopal ministers sure had it rough.

But I was thinking that I might e-mail Katherine Deuel Gillespie who responded on genforum, she is the
granddaughter of Charles E. Deuel and maybe knows something else about the family and if any were in
Passaic in the 1920s. I wonder if there were  stories in her family that might match those told by your
grandfather.

A little clue from Pine Plains. The History of Pine Plains which gives the information about Jonathan Deuel
says that his daughter Rachel (b.1818) married Nicholas Holbrook. Hyatt has her marrying a Dr. E. Crosby,
and lists no marriage for Betsey (born May, 1795). If you scroll down to the Holbrook section in the Pine
Plains history, you see that Nicholas Holbrook came to Northeast in 1810, and I thought this was odd
because he would be at least 25 years older than Rachel.

Fortunately, Nicholas Holbrook, who ran a store at Pulver's Corners, is buried in the Smithfield Cemetery in
Amenia/Northeast. These are the entries:

Dea. Nicholas Holbrook, d. 1849 age 61

Betsey, wife of Dea. Nicholas Holbrook, d. April 30, 1850 age 55

Rachel Holbrook, dau. of Nicholas and Betsey, 1826-1901

Henry Holbrook, son of Nicholas and Betsey, 1821-1848.

So this must be Betsey Deuel instead of Rachel. The history tells us she named one son Newton Holbrook,
after her young brother, here she named a daughter Rachel, after her youngest sister and mother, and she
names her son Henry. I wonder who he is named for?

Her sister, Fanny (Deuel) Bentley, names one son Silas I. Bentley after her brother, he died young and is
buried at the Deuel family cemtery in Milan. She named another son Henry Bentley (I can't remember where I
saw this, but I distinctly remember it, I think I have mentioned it before to you).

So we know that Jonathan & Rachel (Denton) Deuel had at least two grandsons named Henry. I don't know
if Rachel had children or not, I will try to find her. There was an Edward Crosby who was town clerk of
Northeast in the 1840s, maybe he's the husband.
