John J. Deuel
The Marriage Story
John J. Deuel and Maggie Miller were married on June 18th, 1879 in Lodi, New Jersey.
We know this because we have the
State of New Jersey Marriage Return.  Cindy and I
often speculated as to which church in Lodi they were married at.  When we went to
Lodi we did drive around town looking for an old church but we did not find one.  We did
copy some old church photos from a book on Lodi history, but we were still unsure
which church.

That all changed this week when I did more research on the minister who officiated at
their marriage.  His name is recorded on the marriage return as L.G. Jongeneel.  Over
a year ago I had located some information via the web on him, where he was born, his
wife and childrens' names and even learned that in 1880 he was living right next door to
Maggie's family in Lodi!  What I found this week is that in the Historical Directory of the
Reformed Church in America 1628-1992 by Russell L. Gasero, L.G. Jongeneel is
recorded as having presided over the First Reformed Church of Lodi during the years
from 1878-92, which would cover the period that Maggie and John were married.  It also
stated in this directory that the First Reformed merged with the Second Reformed of
Lodi in 1967 to form the Faith Reformed Church.

I then learned that the Faith Reformed Church is still active.  I was able to contact the
pastor of the church, Pastor Tim Ippolito, who kindly sent me photos from a booklet
commemorating the 100 year anniversary of the church.  Sadly he told me that the
original church was demolished in 1970.

To my pleasant surprise he also provided me with a photo and bio/timeline of Reverend
Louis G. Jongeneel.  Here is someone who most likely knew Maggie's family very well
having lived right next door and certainly met Maggie and John when he married them.
All of this took place 126 years ago!

Pastor Timothy Ippolito is going to see if he can locate any records (birth, baptism,
death or marriage) that might still exist at the church.  I'd like to thank him for his kind
words regarding Cindy and for help in opening up another page of history!
